What is Twine?

Twine is an interactive, hyperlink-based, textual storytelling platform. Students use the affordances provided by Twine—such as links, images, audio, multimedia, and reader interaction—to tell stories that are enhanced through using a digital medium. E-literature is inherently hybrid, and “challenges us to re-think our assumptions of what literature can do and be” (Hayles 2007).

For the Grinnell Electronic Literature Project, we define e-literature as literary work that utilize digital technologies such as hypertext, interactive elements, and multimedia to tell stories that would not otherwise be possible (in the same way) if it were in traditional print formats.
